NEW ZEALAND SPRAYS POISON ON ZOO TO PROTECT CROPS

Apes ok but springboks nervous as moth spraying continues

Indra the 23-year-old orang-utan at Auckland Zoo got a little help for his asthma as an expanded aerial attack on the painted apple moth resumed early yesterday.


Indra and Janie the chimpanzee were given medication 24 hours in advance of the blitz by staff worried the spray could aggravate their breathing conditions.

Yesterday was the first time the zoo had been included in the $90 million spraying campaign over 40,400 west Auckland households to kill the painted apple moth before it can damage agricultural crops....
